THE THRILL OF THE GRILL

PRINTER FREINDLY VERSION |

Mmmm… grilling season! The smell of meats and vegetables grilling over an open fire is practically irresistible. Eating too many burgers and steaks can clog up your arteries and weigh you down with calories and fat. But your grill doesn’t have to be the bearer of bad beef.

What I love about the grill is that you can use it to cook all kinds of delicious and healthy foods.

So let’s take a walk outside and explore some ways that you and your grill can enjoy a compatible, healthy and delicious relationship this summer.

1) Lean towards lean. To begin, choose a lean ground beef for your burger brigade. You’ll cut a ton of calories and fat, while you save the same delicious taste! If you’re worried about sacrificing flavor, you need only get creative with your toppings and marinades!

2) …Which leads me to this delicious hamburger topper! Pack your lean ground beef or ground turkey into a patty and begin its grilling, while you lay a few rings of pineapple onto the grill beside it. Grilled pineapple to top your burger, doesn’t that sound succulent? Good, now grill up that bad boy for a delicious and juicy surprise with every bite!

3) Low-sodium marinades. While your meats and poultry certainly don’t need a marinade to pizzazz them up, many people are fond of adding some exciting extra flavor to your grilling foods. Choose a marinade that’s low-sodium to ensure that you’re not adding more than flavor to your meat!

4) Grill your sides. Why should the protein get all the attention? Get your sides in on the fiery fun, too. Kabobs of veggies are a smoky treat. Try this delicious Grilled Balsamic Asparagus recipe from Diet.com’s recipes section, or give our Grilled Corn on the Cob a try.

5) Turn up the heat on some summer fruit. Grilled fruit is a nice change of pace from regular fruit salad! Throw some pineapple slices, bananas, peaches and nectarines on the grill and toss with honey, lemon juice and chopped mint. It may sound strange but it’s mmm, mmm mouthwatering!

Let your diet go up in smoke this summer and have fun experimenting with back yard barbequing. When the going gets warm, the warm get grillin’!
